Mō tēnei tūranga - about the role

Working within the Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO), as a key member of the EPMO Leadership Team, the Manager Controls and Performance role is critical to ensuring Fire and Emergency New Zealand's (FENZ) performance in the delivery, effective management and reporting of important and complex projects that help support front line firefighters and the communities we serve.

Reportingtothe National Manager EPMO, you will lead and be accountable for establishing fit for purpose project management and delivery contract management frameworks aligned to Fire and Emergency NZ requirements, and for planning and executing on a continuous improvement roadmap for each framework. You will have a strong focus on well-designed controls, effective and audience centred reporting, robust assurance measures and risk management, and be able to translate these concepts into uncomplicated and easy to use processes and tools and guide your team in the effective roll out and embedment of new practices.

You will also be responsible for guiding the ongoing development, maturation, and effective use of the investment prioritisation framework for FENZ, leading twice yearly investment case development and assessment for strategically important projects seeking organisational funding.

Within this role, you will be responsible for managing a team of six direct reports.

 

Ko tāu nā i tēnei tūranga - what you'll bring to the role

You will be able to manage multiple parallel work programmes and prioritise simultaneously whilst leading, directing and coaching your team. With your strong understanding of project and portfolio management processes, project delivery assurance, budget, and financial analysis, procurement and contract management you will be able to lead your team in delivering to our organisational goals.  You will be experienced in project and portfolio risk management and be familiar with earned value management techniques. As a natural change leader, you will have demonstrable experience in developing and delivering training on processes and tools supporting to development of project and contract managers, sponsors and other key stakeholders.

 

To be successful in this role, we'd expect you will have:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Project Manager or a related field or equivalent work experience.
  • A project management qualification (eg PMP, CCP or similar) or training and certification in project controls, risk management, or performance optimization
  • A minimum of 10+ years of project controls, project management or related role experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including extensive experience in preparing and delivering governance reporting.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with a focus on developing high-performing teams.
  • Advanced proficiency in data and trend analysis, using project controls and performance measurement tools (e.g Excel and PowerBI) and experience in developing, implementing and embedding reporting and assurance tools and practices. PowerBI proficiency is desirable.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.

The salary range for this role is $151,774-$168,638 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
