Principal Advisors - Royal Commission of Inquiry (COVID-19 Lessons Phase 2)

About us

The purpose of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (COVID-19 Lessons) is to strengthen New Zealand's preparedness for, and response to, any future pandemic by identifying the lessons learned from New Zealand's response to COVID-19. The Government has established Phase Two of the Inquiry to provide further recommendations on actions that will strengthen New Zealand's pandemic preparedness.

The Department of Internal Affairs provides administrative assistance, where needed, to the Inquiry.

About the opportunity

As Principal Advisor you will:

  • Provide thought leadership, and strategic advice to support Commissioners in delivering on the terms of reference of the Royal Commission
  • Play a lead role in the gathering, review and analysis of reports, investigative outputs, data, research and other material relevant to the terms of reference
  • Provide intellectual and thought leadership to other Inquiry team members
  • Help provide quality assurance over the work programme.

About you

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • Significant experience in leading the provision of high-quality analysis and advice and effectively applying the outcomes of research and evaluation
  • Exceptional ability to identify and effectively mitigate risks and consistently use sound judgement on controversial or critical issues using the best evidence available
  • Excellent knowledge of government and policy processes
  • Excellent analytical skills and innovative thinking
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent relationship skills and the ability to work at all levels of organisations and communities
  • A post-graduate qualification in a relevant field (e.g. public policy, economics, epidemiology, education, health and disability, institutional and legal arrangements and practice), or equivalent knowledge, skill and experience is essential.
