About the role

As a Call Centre Operator, you will be a crucial point of contact, ensuring prompt and professional responses to incoming calls. This role is essential in connecting patients, staff, and external stakeholders to the appropriate services within Nelson Hospital. Your ability to communicate effectively, remain calm under pressure, and deliver accurate information will directly impact the hospital - s ability to provide high-quality care.

  • Casual position is to cover annual leave and sick leave.
  • Permanent part-time position offers a 0.35FTE schedule, with set working days on Sunday 1200 PM - 1900 PM and Monday 1500 PM - 2200 PM.

About the Team/Service/Location

Our Communication, Administration, and Clerical Service is the backbone of Nelson Hospital - s operations. This team is responsible for managing critical communication channels, ensuring patients and staff receive the support they need, 24/7. Whether responding to emergency situations, coordinating logistics, or assisting visitors, the service plays a vital role in keeping the hospital running smoothly.

About you:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Answer and Redirect Calls.
  • Manage a high volume of incoming calls, connecting callers to the appropriate departments or personnel promptly.
  • Handle urgent and emergency calls, following established protocols to ensure timely responses.
  • Provide accurate information to callers regarding hospital services and processes.
  • Work closely with clinical and non-clinical teams to ensure smooth communication across all hospital services.
  • Perform clerical duties as required, including updating contact directories, maintaining records, and assisting with general communication-related tasks.

Skills and experience

  • Previous call centre, administrative, or healthcare experience is highly desirable.
  • Clear and professional verbal communication is a must.
  • Reliable to work the set Sunday and Monday schedule without exception.
  • Proven capacity to handle multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy under pressure.

  • Ability to remain composed and responsive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth.
  • Experience in projects / initiatives which give effect to Te Tiriti principals and frameworks, and the application of Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings.
