About the Role
As a general cardiologist you will delivering inpatient cardiology care approximately one in five weeks and outpatient ambulatory services predominantly from our base in Hastings but also at Napier Health Centre and our rural hospitals in Wairoa and Central Hawke’s Bay.
There are many opportunities to develop subspecialist interests that will complement the department’s current service, with high levels of unmet need present in our community.
The department’s facilities allow echocardiography, CT coronary angiography, cardiac MRI, exercise treadmill testing, ambulatory cardiac monitoring, a diagnostic angiography laboratory and cardiac device implantation (as of this year).
Proficiency in left and right heart catheterisation studies, temporary pacing wires and pericardial drains is important.
About the Team/Service/ Location
The team is supported by one registrar, a house officer, inpatient cardiology nursing staff, a nurse practitioner, several clinical nurse specialists and senior cardiology outpatient nurses, two cardiac sonographers and two cardiac physiologists.
We also have close ties with allied health services, other specialities within our hospital, as well as with Wellington Regional Hospital, our tertiary centre, who provide a comprehensive package of care including interventional cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery.

About you
You must be registered, or eligible for registration, with the Medical Council of New Zealand as a Specialist Cardiologist and must be a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, or equivalent.
You should have proven experience in the following:
- Cardiological procedures
- Supervision and teaching of junior medical staff
- Working within a multidisciplinary team
- Developing and maintaining effective clinical systems
