Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

As a Chapter Lead Engineering, you will lead a chapter within the Digital Group, reporting to our Chief Technology Officer. This role combines servant leadership with deep technical knowledge and hands-on execution.

You will ensure chapter members are effectively deployed to agile delivery squads, building their skills in software and platform engineering. You will navigate strategy, agile delivery, and problem-solving while fostering growth and collaboration across teams.

As a People Leader with 20 direct reports, you will attract talent in order to build a strong engineering team, as well as ensuring the chapter can scale quickly and cost-effectively by partnering with external suppliers. You will champion Agile ways of working, continuous improvement practices, and build a Centre of Excellence to standardize ways of working across squads. Keeping up with industry trends, you will build a culture of continuous learning within the chapter.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Proven experience (ideally with a minimum of 5 years) as a Chapter Lead or similar engineering leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of agile practices and deep knowledge in software and platform engineering.
  • Strong leadership skills, strategic thinking, and excellent communication skills.
  • A servant leader mindset that empowers team members and fosters a positive environment.
  • Ability to build strategic partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Understanding of the business context and strategic goals.


Qualifications:

  • Tertiary level qualification in a relevant subject or equivalent experience.
  • Agile certifications are beneficial.


You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori. You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.
