    About the Role

    An opportunity has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic and self-motivated medical laboratory scientist to lead and manage our laboratory based at Te Kuiti Hospital. As this is a small multi-discipline laboratory, participation in routine technical work is also required, including participation in the on call and weekend rosters.


    About the Location

    Te Kuiti is one of five Te Whatu Ora – Waikato Laboratories. The laboratory is based at Te Kuiti Hospital, and provides a service to both the hospital and the wider community.

    The laboratory is staffed by a friendly and close knit team of eight multi-skilled scientists and technicians.

    Testing performed  is mainly Biochemistry,  Haematology, and a limited scope of Microbiology. The laboratory also issues blood products, and oversees a range of Point of Care testing for the clinical areas of the hospital.

    As part of the Waikato Laboratory management team, you will be supported by, and work collegially with our other rural laboratory Charge Scientists and the management team based at Waikato Hospital.  


    About you

    The critical attributes and experience required to be successful in this role are:

    • A skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist, preferably with multi-discipline experience.
    • Good technical knowledge and understanding of medical laboratory operations
    • An engaging and inspiring leadership style and excellent interpersonal skills
    • Ability to manage people, systems, budget and resources to ensure service delivery of a high standard
    • A progressive thinker and willing to take on new challenges
    • Knowledge and understanding of quality processes and accreditation standards
    • Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth
    • Experience in upholding Te Tiriti principals and frameworks, and the application of Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings.  


    The successful candidate must be eligible to hold registration with the New Zealand Medical Sciences Council.

    Preference will be given to applicants with experience in leading others. A positive and optimistic attitude is essential to this important leadership role.
