Chef Manager - Auckland
We are looking for an experienced Chef Manager to join the leadership team in a 280-bed aged care facility in leafy Epsom. There are 16 units, each with 10 - 20 residents and each unit has its own homestyle kitchen and dining room. Meals are prepared and cooked in the main production kitchen and sent in boxes (hot and cold) to each unit for care staff to plate and serve. Centrally located, this village offers rest home, hospital, young disabled, day and respite cares, carer support, post-operative stays and palliative care. All meals are thoughtfully planned and prepared, with menus created in collaboration between residents and Chef Managers at the head office level.
The opportunity
The Chef Manager leads a dedicated team of up to 20 chefs and kitchen staff, overseeing the delivery of exceptional catering services to 280 residents. This hands-on role demands a strong presence in the kitchen each day, where you will supervise and guide your team, ensuring strict adherence to company recipes, policies, food safety, and health and safety regulations. Your leadership will be pivotal in maintaining high standards of quality and compliance at all times. The kitchen operates like a well-oiled machine because of the many proven systems in place, such as automated ordering processes, efficient inventory management, detailed preparation schedules, clear communication channels, and strict adherence to food safety protocols, all within their own purpose-built app. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Who we are looking for
This is a senior position within a large care facility, and we are seeking a highly skilled Chef Manager with extensive industry experience-ideally 15+ years, including at least 5 years in residential catering (such as aged care, university halls, or boarding schools). The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of leadership in a residential catering setting (essential), managing daily catering operations for a minimum of 200 residents. We are also looking for candidates who:
• Are a natural leader who can train and mentor staff
• Have a strong grasp of fundamental cooking techniques and have the ability to quickly identify and resolve any issues that arise.
• In-depth understanding of all IDDSI standards and expectations within the Aged Care sector.
• Excellent communication skills that allow to you engage with residents with compassion and understanding as well maintain clear communication with staff, suppliers, team leads and management.
• Possess good computer skills including Word and Excel
• Treats everyone with respect and kindness and isn't afraid to get stuck in and wash a few dishes if they have to!

- Oversee kitchen staff to ensure adherence to the established systems and recipes, guaranteeing all items are properly prepared and received.
- Monitor the final food products to ensure they meet quality standards, addressing any issues immediately before service.
- Manage standing orders for protein and vegetables, adjusting for changes in resident numbers or requirements.
- Regularly update the Summary Sheets for each unit as they are received from the clinical teams.
- Place orders according to established procedures using the pre-determined order forms.
- Monitoring and maintaining compliance with all company and government health & safety and food safety regulations and lead the audit procedures
