We are looking for an experienced and strategic leader to take on the statutory role of Chief Librarian of the Alexander Turnbull Library, and the operational leadership role of Director, Library Collections within the new structure of National Library and Archives New Zealand. within the new structure of and Archives New Zealand Te Rua Mahara o te Kawangatanga
This unique position is responsible for the care, development and access of nationally significant research collections and plays a key role in delivering the National Library's legislative responsibilities. As Chief Librarian, you will exercise the functions and powers delegated under the National Library Act 2003. As Director, reporting to the National Librarian, you will lead the teams that manage the National Library and Alexander Turnbull Library collections, including access, preservation, metadata, and research services.
The Library Collections Directorate leads the stewardship of our national collections and ensures they are accessible now and into the future. This role sits at the heart of that work.
As part of a new joint leadership team across the National Library and Archives New Zealand, the Director contributes to strategic development, integration of services, and ensuring Te Tiriti o Waitangi responsibilities are embedded across practice.
What we're looking for
We're seeking a senior leader with:
- Significant experience in the library or information sector at a senior level
- Demonstrated expertise in developing and managing research collections of national significance
- A deep understanding of the legislative and regulatory framework relevant to libraries and archives
- A proven commitment to working effectively with Māori, including incorporating Te Ao Māori perspectives into practice
- Excellent relationship management and communication skills across a wide range of stakeholders
- Strategic agility and the ability to lead and embed change through influence and collaboration
You will also have strong people leadership experience and a track record of managing complex operational delivery in a public sector or knowledge-based environment.
This role holds formal delegation under the National Library Act 2003 and will suit someone who thrives on responsibility, operates with integrity, and is motivated by public service.
