Counties Manukau District is recognised as one of the busiest community health care providers in Australasia - serving New Zealand's most culturally diverse populations. It's this diversity that offers unique opportunities for health professionals on both a personal and professional level.
We are seeking Clinical Psychologists to join the Adult Rehabilitation and Health of Older People (ARHOP) service. This role is part of a small team based at Middlemore Hospital and Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation Unit and provides psychological support services for adult and older adult in-patient rehabilitation. The Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation Unit in Otara (ASRU)is one of only two specialist spinal rehab units in NZ. In addition, the role provides outpatient psychological assessment and treatment for stroke patients in the community who are under the care of the Community Stroke Rehabilitation Service (CSR).
The ideal psychologist would be energetic, innovative, and keen to work as part of the wider interdisciplinary team providing services for the treatment and rehabilitation of people following life changing health events such as Stroke, Amputation, Head Injury, Complex Orthopaedic, Neurological and Spinal Cord Impairment as well as a range of other physical health conditions. Work on the older adult wards requires an ability to relate to older people facing major life changes, such as the need to move into a care setting, and knowledge of cognitive assessment in the elderly and the dementias would be an advantage.
Training in Neuropsychology would be preferred.
Activities will include providing psychological assessment and intervention to enhance coping and adjustment to impairment, and assisting with behavioural management difficulties as well as consultation to the interdisciplinary team. In addition to direct clinical roles with patients, the role includes provision of clinical services to patients’ significant others and support to other clinical staff as required. You will have extensive opportunities to contribute to service development, staff consultation, consultation services with other staff and staff training, and (if trained) neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation.
You will work within a small, supportive team of ARHOP psychologists, and have wider collegial and professional support from the Psychological Medicine service. You can expect great support and professional development in this role.
