Job Description

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

Fixed term full-time or part-time position
Be a part of friendly and supportive team

If you are a generalist anaesthetist looking for an interesting and diverse workload, who would like to be part of a friendly and supportive team and wants to contribute to the health and wellbeing of our South Auckland community, we would love to hear from you!

The Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine at Health New Zealand’s Counties Manukau District serves a culturally diverse population of approximately 600,000 people across East and South Auckland. Reflecting the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, we aspire to having a workforce reflective of the communities we serve and aim for equitable outcomes for all.

We provide anaesthetic care for a broad range of elective surgical specialties in addition to a busy and diverse acute workload.

Anaesthetists are rostered to work at both sites where CM District provides surgical services. Middlemore Hospital is a busy 800-bed tertiary-level teaching hospital 14 operating theatres. 8km away Manukau Surgical Centre at Manukau Health Park provides an additional 10 theatres for lower complexity, short-stay surgery with a further 4 theatres being built, 60 post-surgical beds, an Anaesthetic Pre-assessment Clinic and an Anaesthetic-led four-bed Perioperative Care Unit that provides close observation and 2:1 nursing ratios.

We provide approximately 32,000 anaesthetic episodes per year across all surgical specialties, including, general surgery, orthopaedics, urology, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, burns, plastics and gynaecology. Up to 10% of our patients are low complexity paediatrics and our tertiary obstetric centre delivers over 7000 babies annually.

Our district offers several regional specialist services. We are home to the National Burns Centre, and we receive tertiary regional referrals for acute spinal injuries, mangled limb, plastic surgery, hands, maxillofacial surgery and rigid bronchoscopy.

In addition, the anaesthetic department provides a small amount of off-the-floor work in MRI, CT, interventional radiology, a newly built gastroenterology and respiratory procedural suite, and procedural sedation for pacemaker insertion in the cardiac catheter lab or dressing changes on the National Burns unit.

We also provide acute, complex and chronic pain management across both sites.

To meet these demands CM District anaesthetists are collegial, flexible and skilled team members. Our anaesthetists have a true generalist skillset, though work together as a team to solve problems using individuals’ subspecialty interests and experience. We are a friendly and supportive department with a culture of continuous improvement. Departmental members are team players, treat patients and staff with kindness, and contribute to our collective skillset with a variety of clinical and non-clinical interests and skills. Staff are expected, and are supported, to participate in departmental administrative, quality assurance and educational activities.

As the ideal candidate, you will have clinical experience in some, or all of the areas listed above, and will either be registered or be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

Please note, if you are not currently registered in New Zealand and have overseas medical qualifications, you will be required to provide source verification of your qualifications for your registration application. For more information about the registration process and source verification of qualifications, please visit www.mcnz.org.nz.

We are an Accredited Employer with Immigration NZ and we can provide you support in gaining Accredited Employer Work Visa if you meet the Immigration criteria. We will provide suitable relocation package for candidates moving from overseas as well as outside of Auckland.

We believe Counties Manukau offers anaesthetists unique opportunities on both a personal and professional level. If you like the sound of our workload mix and want to be part of a skilled and supportive team, we would love to hear from you!
