Contract:  Permanent/Fixed term, full time 40 hours p/w

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

An opportunity exists for a neurosurgeon to join our team of specialists in full time permanent or fixed term role  (to be negotiated). Potential sub-specialty interests would include craniofacial, neurovascular and spine.  However, all applicants would be considered. 

As a senior medical officer/consultant you will be responsible for providing a high standard of clinical practice and expertise to the patients under your care. It is essential that you are eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. You will be known by your peers as someone who is able to work within a multi-disciplinary environment, being able to engage with a number of different people from various backgrounds. You will also be expected to participate in the supervision and instruction of junior doctors within the service. 

The successful candidate will be joining a team of 5 Neurosurgeons and 2 Clinical Nurse Specialists.

The Neuroscience Service provides regional / tertiary specialist assessment and treatment for people with trauma and diseases affecting neurological function.

The coverage area is from Blenheim in the South to Hawkes Bay and over to Taranaki in the North. The service collaborates with other services, particularly Neurology, Orthopaedics, ENT and Plastic Surgeons in providing treatment to various groups of patients.

These services are provided on an inpatient basis at Wellington Hospital and also on an outpatient basis at Wellington, Palmerston North, New Plymouth and Hastings.

Moū - About you

  • Vocationally registered in Neurosurgeon with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
  • FRACS or equivalent qualification and be able to register for with the MCNZ
  • Work in collaboration with multidisciplinary team
  • Provide acute and elective clinical care and supervision across outpatient, inpatient and theatre services
  • Participate in an acute on call roster
  • Participate in relevant service and clinical meetings
  • Relevant experience and training
