Hāwera Hospital opened in 2002. The purpose-built facility includes a seven bed ED and 17 Bed inpatient ward (Medical and AT&R). The Hāwera Emergency Department provides a 24-hour service for the 30,000 population of South Taranaki and sees approximately 15,000 patients per year. There is a four-bed primary birthing unit and a large number of specialist outpatient clinics are held in Hāwera. The South Taranaki Rural Health General Practice is also located on site at Hāwera Hospital.
The Hospital has a well-equipped laboratory service and a brand new Siemens machine the radiology department. In addition, the ED has a state-of-the-art Sonosite LX USS machine available for clinician-performed ultrasounds and a team passionate about POCUS.

We are seeking rural, community minded doctors to be part of Te Whatu Ora Taranaki’s vision of a fit for purpose integrated primary and secondary health service in the established Hāwera Hospital.
If you want to work as a Generalist within the Rural Hospital Medicine scope of practice, in a modern innovative environment this could be what you are looking for!
We are looking to grow our team of open minded and progressive doctors where you will join a supportive team providing world class medical services and comprehensive community care at a level 3 rural hospital.
We need practitioners who can use their varied and broad generalist knowledge and experience to diagnose and treat patients in either a primary care and/or secondary care high acuity setting with opportunities to follow your patients admitted to the inpatient ward.
