(Fixed Term 10 months)

  • Join a respected, high-performing legal team at the heart of the energy sector
  • Work autonomously, alongside senior counsel, across a diverse, rapidly growing business
  • Apply your legal expertise to enable a more sustainable, electrified future

Are you ready to play a key role in shaping New Zealand's energy landscape? Bring your legal expertise and strategic mindset to Transpower, where you'll help power the future by supporting a more electrified, low-carbon economy.

With an urgent focus on accelerated electrification, we're enabling a cleaner, more sustainable future for generations to come.

The Role

As Corporate Counsel, you'll play a pivotal role in providing strategic legal guidance across our dynamic organisation. This fixed term parental leave cover role offers a wide range of interesting work including:

  • Advise on a wide range of commercial and regulatory matters, working with stakeholders including electricity generators, distribution networks, regulators, service partners, and suppliers.
  • Work alongside executive leaders and business functions, supporting decision-making with clear, commercially astute legal advice.
  • Use your analytical skills to anticipate legal and regulatory impacts in a rapidly evolving industry.
  • Navigate complex contractual, compliance and operational challenges with confidence and clarity.

This role offers the perfect blend of autonomy and collaboration—you'll be a trusted advisor, supported by experienced counsel and working closely with Transpower's operational, planning and business support teams, contributing to shaping the strategic direction of a business at the forefront of New Zealand's energy transformation.

What You'll Bring

We're looking for a proactive, strategic thinker who thrives in a dynamic environment. To succeed in this role, you'll need:

  • An LLB with 5-8+ years' experience in a law firm or in-house corporate legal team
A current New Zealand Law Society practising certificate (or eligible to hold and maintain a practicing certificate)
  • Experience in New Zealand law, ideally within large, commercially oriented and/or regulated businesses (revenue $500M+)
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills—you know when legal input is needed and how to deliver practical, effective solutions
  • The ability to distil complex legal issues into clear, actionable advice, both in writing and verbally
  • Expertise in contract negotiation and drafting, with a sharp eye for risk assessment
