Ko wai mātou | Who we are

Auckland Prison, located in Paremoremo on Auckland's North Shore, is the only maximum-security prison in New Zealand. Auckland Prison was originally built in the 1950s, however, in late 2018 the new facility was opened following a dawn blessing onsite led by Ngāti Whātua. Auckland Prison is home to two special treatment units and offers a range of rehabilitative and reintegrative programmes including employment and release to work activities. A large tewhatewha is situated at the entrance of the site which symbolises the challenge to the people in our care to be good providers, protectors, and leaders of their whānau. We are committed to supporting people in Prison to reach their full potential by taking a reintegrative approach that enables the health and wellbeing of individuals, whānau, and iwi whilst always maintaining and prioritising staff safety.

Ara Poutama Aotearoa is a name that has been gifted to us and conveys the responsibility for those in our care to reach their potential and our commitment to improving the oranga and safety of the people, whānau, and that of the communities we serve.
