At the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) | Te Tira Tiaki, our mission is to protect and enhance Aotearoa New Zealand's security and wellbeing. We provide Signals Intelligence and Cyber Security and resilience to organisations of national significance to successfully navigate in an unpredictable world.

The role

You will join a technology centric team who collectively do amazing things to support an important service to the country with computing and technology, but you should also be comfortable solving complex problems on your own and taking responsibility for the literal machinery of Government. You'll know that when the Architects and Engineers dream up an idea, you'll be the one who will make it work and that good uptime figures will be thanks to you.

You will have some skills that we are definitely looking for such as;

  • Work experience with IT hardware and cabling.
  • System monitoring and response.
  • Familiarity with mechanical and electrical systems

And you might have familiarity with some of the following areas that aren't essential but would definitely be useful:

  • Installation and maintenance of a range of technical equipment
  • Updating and production of system documentation
  • Linux and Windows administration
  • Electrical and electronics systems
  • Operating Building Management Systems

Plus, it would also be helpful for you to have some understanding of:

  • Networking concepts
  • Mechanical systems such as chillers, generators and air handlers
  • Working in a secure environment
  • Engineering for resilience and reliability

This is a role that operates on a shift roster to support 24/7 coverage. That's not for everyone, but for those who what to take advantage of the opportunities (both social and financial) that it brings, this could be for you.

Before you apply

Working within our unique environment means we have to ensure you're eligible for employment.

You must:

  • Have been a New Zealand Citizen for at least 10 years

OR

Hold a current NZ Residency Class Visa and ideally have been a citizen of the UK, USA, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years

  • Be eligible to obtain a Top Secret Special (TSS) security clearance
    • Ordinarily, this means you'll have a 15 year checkable background in countries NZSIS Vetting can make meaningful and reliable checks.
