Ngā kawenga | About the role

The primary purpose of the Deputy General Manager – Custodial is to support the General Manager at Waikeria Prison in championing and implementing national and regional initiatives designed to develop a one-team approach on-site, violence reduction, staff safety and ensure a consistent approach to prison management and reducing re-offending. The position has direct reports and provides leadership, guidance and support for these managers; will take the lead on the majority of performance and disciplinary matters within custodial units; and is designated to stand in for the General Manager in his absence.  

We are after an experienced Leader who will reflect our values, support a positive, learning culture and who can build on the foundation of our organisation's strategy - Hōkai Rangi.  As the Deputy General Manager, you will be inclusive Leader your role will be accountable for leading and managing the development and delivery of services related to rehabilitation, learning and employment services and opportunities for people in our care. 

Additionally, this position could possibly operate as part of a rotating opportunity with the Deputy General Manager – Site Pathways role. This allows for the individual to gain experience and contribute to both the custodial and site pathways functions, further developing leadership skills and providing a broader perspective on prison operations.

Along with the above we would like to hear from you if you are able to demonstrate the following:

  • Proven experience in supporting management in a role requiring business planning, staff management and development, consultation, communication, and relationship management skills
  • An understanding of the factors impacting rehabilitation coupled with an excellent working knowledge of key agencies, both governmental and non-governmental, in the social/justice sectors
  • A commitment to working constructively towards our Hōkai Rangi goals to lower the proportion of Māori in the Corrections system
  • The ability to understand and respect different cultural perspectives, particularly in relation to te ao Māori
  • Commitment to developing staff to improve performance, contribute to culture change and build management capability
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong working relations with external agencies and stakeholder groups, taking account of their strategic goals, pressures and priorities
  • Key to your success will be proven relationship management skills as the role requires significant community, agency, partnerships and stakeholder engagement
  • Custodial knowledge and or experience for this role would be advantageous but is not a requirement

The salary applicable for this position is Scale C of the Frontline Managers Collective.
