Immigration New Zealand is the operational delivery arm of the immigration system.
Our core functions are:
- Assessing visa applications for people that are looking to work, study, visit or settle in New Zealand.
- Ensuring that people crossing the border and staying in New Zealand are entitled to do so.
- Helping refugees to make New Zealand their home.
- Playing our part in the global immigration system.
Your role as an Immigration Officer:
The core function of this role is to assess visa applications which can vary in complexity and be high volume, dependant on the visa category.
You will be required to manage your workflow, assess information, investigate, interpret, and apply legislation to make sound and rational decisions. You will liaise with internal and external stakeholders, assess risk, manage a high-volume caseload and work collaboratively across the network.
You will work across different internal systems, use multiple screens, navigate through detailed information, and provide written rationale for your decisions.
Daily responsibilities include:
- Processing visa applications, by assessing information against current legislation and policies.
- Workflow and caseload management.
- Building relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Applying rational and analytical thinking to decisions when reviewing applications.
- Writing well-reasoned rationale to support your decisions.
- Applying current legislation and policies
Our Christchurch site is centrally located in the heart of Christchurch City. We are two branches within one site and process a range of different visa categories that vary in complexity and volume. These vacancies are within our Christchurch 2 branch. We are a cohesive and diverse team that focuses on career development by creating an open and supportive environment.
MBIE offers a range of flexible working options:
Standard full time, Monday to Friday between 6am – 6pm (training period will be within the hours of 8.30am – 5pm)
Training is completed on site and will take approximately 3-4 months to become fully competent in the role. During this time, you are required to be on site every day. Once fully competent in your role you can discuss more flexible working options with your manager, such as working from home up to 2 days per week with flexible start and finish times.
Your strengths will be in your ability to work at pace, interpret information, manage workflow efficiently, apply critical thinking and rationale to the visa applications you are assessing.
Skills and Experience Required:
- Exceptional written communication and correct use of grammar to convey rationale.
- Strong verbal communication.
- Proficient computer literacy across multiple platforms and standard software packages.
- High volume caseload and workflow management.
- Ability to accept feedback and be resilient under pressure.
- Ability to learn quickly and apply new information as required.
- Be adaptable in a changing environment.
- Eye for detail and an ability to interpret information.
- A strong moral compass and be known to ‘act with integrity' in all you undertake.
To be eligible for this role, you will need to be a New Zealand citizen or hold a New Zealand Permanent Resident Visa.

Recruitment Process:
We will be reviewing applications throughout the advertising period; we may close advertising early due to anticipated high application numbers.

- The recruitment process will involve shortlisting during the application period, situational judgement assessment (Friday 20th September – Sun 22nd September) and a formal panel interview and written assessment (Friday 27th Sept – Friday 4th October).
- Start date is Monday 25th November 2024
