The Alexander Turnbull Library has the mandate to preserve, protect, develop and make accessible its collections for all the people of New Zealand in a manner consistent with their status as documentary heritage and tāonga.

The Alexander Turnbull Library is looking for an energetic person to join a team of library assistants. You will be assigned to a wide range of activities in Collection Care and Imaging Services teams. The role is an opportunity for people wanting to develop a wide range of skills in library activities, especially in regard to handling collections and providing effective access to researchers to both original items and digital copies.

Your Duties will include:

  • Retrieving and re-shelving ATL and National Library collections in response to client requests for research, exhibitions, and copying programmes as rostered.
  • Shelving newly acquired items into cool stores.
  • Assisting with the newspaper preservation microfilming programmes including the quality assurance of the outsourced microfilming.
  • Using digital technologies to produce copies of heritage items for client orders, including tracking and dispatching copy orders.
  • Supporting digitisation projects and other collection management projects.

We are seeking people who:

  • have a high standard of fitness and enjoy working on their feet
  • have excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • enjoy being part of a team but are also self-motivated
  • have the capability to work to meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • have good computer skills
  • Are able to work flexible hours including Saturdays when required.
  • Are studying towards a library or Museum qualification and would like to grow their knowledge of basic library routines.

To ensure success in this position you will be team orientated, with the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines. A high level of computer literacy is required and you must be physically fit, able to retrieve and return large, awkward and heavy items located in both low and high shelving areas in stores that are environmentally controlled with temperatures ranging from 2 degrees to 15 degrees to suit long term preservation of heritage collections in different formats.

A current driver's licence is advantageous.
