Natural History Collection Technicians

Te Papa is looking for two suitably qualified Natural History Technicians to contribute to a 12 month project to document and image botanical collection specimens.

The Te Papa Natural History team develop, care for, and research collections of plants and animals, documenting and scientifically describing the biodiversity of Aotearoa New Zealand, understanding its evolutionary history, and providing the foundations for its protection. Through exhibitions, publications, public programmes and learning programmes, we also strengthen public understanding of te taiao, the natural environment.

The Natural History Technician's work will include tasks such as: 

  • processing and preparing specimens for the collection
  • registering and documenting specimens
  • handling and storage of specimens

We are looking for candidates that:

  • are studying towards or hold a tertiary qualification in a relevant subject in science such as Biology or Ecology
  • have experience in, or ability to learn, the application of collection registration and preservation techniques, including the ability to use databases, technology and systems required for recording
  • are methodical and have orderly work habits, delivering to assigned tasks and timelines
  • are able to learn under supervision, then apply knowledge to tasks at hand
  • are able to work independently and effectively on repetitive tasks.
  • are willing and able to work co-operatively and contribute positively in a team
  • are physically fit and able to handle and lift heavy or awkward specimens or materials.

The hourly rate for this position is between $28.60 – $33.90 based on the skills and experience offered by the candidate, those required of the role, and internal relativities.

We are seeking candidates for full-time positions however we are open to discussing part time hours for the right candidate.
