RMO salaries are calculated based on relevant previous years of experience and the average weekly hours of work as set out in the relevant run description. For the current salary bands, please refer to either the Specialty Trainees of New Zealand (SToNZ) or Resident Doctors - Association (RDA) Single-Employer Collective Agreements. Experience and Eligibility

  • Suitable for Resident Medical Officers who are Neonatal advanced trainees. Advanced general paediatric trainees with previous neonatal experience would also be encouraged to apply.
  • You must have eligibility for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Wellington NICU - Wellington Regional Hospital

Wellington NICU is a busy, high acuity tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where you will gain experience in all areas on advanced perinatal/neonatal medicine. The unit has 40 funded bed spaces, with the majority being intensive care cots, servicing a large catchment area covering central New Zealand.  

We provide evidence-based care for infants with complex medical and surgical needs, including infants from 22+5 weeks gestational age. The unit works in close partnership with a large Maternal-Fetal Medicine service and is supported by excellent specialties include paediatric surgery, paediatric radiology, and paediatric neurology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, and genetics.  The unit has a highly skilled allied health work force supporting infants, families, and clinicians, including neonatal therapists, speech and language therapists, dietician, pharmacist, social workers and whanau care support, and psychotherapist.

We also work closely with our regional level II and level I Special Care Baby Units to provide continuity of care for infants and their families.

Our unit provides a supportive and friendly work environment where teamwork, initiative and integrity are highly valued.

 

The role can be somewhat flexible to meet level of experience and training, but will include opportunities including:

  • Neonatal transport co-ordination and participation in high acuity transfers
    • We run our own Neonatal retrieval service, transferring approximately 500 infants per year, the majority being by fixed wing and helicopter
  • Developing procedural skills
    • The expectation would be to already have competency with intubation, ventilation, cannulation, umbilical and central lines. Further advancing of these skills will be supported.
  • Participation in the Neonatologist service roster (always with consultant back up)
    • This will include - service weeks - during daytime hours
    • Antenatal consultations
    • Overnight on call, with back up.
  • ASUM supported Training pathway for Clinician performed ultrasound (Cardiac/cranial/abdominal/ lung)
  • Develop non-clinical consultant skills with involvement in:
    • Governance, Risk management, Policy work, Quality Improvement, Inter-service development
  • Outpatient clinics
    • Neonatal short term medical and long-term neurodevelopmental follow-up clinics.
    • Bayley v4 assessments and early CP assessments including General Movement Assessments.
  • Leadership of the RMO and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner group
    • Orientation, teaching, and supervision
  • Research
    • Support to develop an advanced Neonatal training project
    • Opportunities to be involved in current clinical research and audits in the unit
  • Education
    • Neonatal weekly education series co-ordination
    • Involvement in the in situ simulation training program
    • Nursing study day teaching sessions
    • Opportunities to be involved in regional education
    • Involvement in University of Otago 5th year Paediatric curriculum

Wellington NICU is a training site accredited with the RACP for 24 months of advanced Neonatal/Perinatal training, 18 months of core training, and surgical, long term follow up activities and transport requirements of training are able to be completed.
