Job Description

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

Paediatrician

Te Whatu Ora - South Canterbury

Timaru Hospital - South Island, New Zealand

Permanent Role - 0.6 - 0.8 FTE

An opportunity exists at Timaru Hospital, where you - ll enjoy a semi-autonomous role, with other general peadiatricians, developing a greater community focus all the while supported by excellent hospital infrastructure.

Paediatric Service at Timaru Hospital

The work involves general paediatrics in its broadest sense - from neonates to adolescents, with a large outpatient focus.  This is a - hands on - role and inpatient numbers are small.

With no registrars, we have junior doctors who are inspired to learn alongside a trainee intern.  You will work closely with a small Child Development Team and get to know community providers well.  You - ll be joining a team of skilled professionals, motivated to make a difference, while being supported by good clinical systems, including high standards of obstetric cover. There is an element of on call and weekend work.

Neonatal care is delivered in a Level 1 unit with 2 high dependency cots for stabilisation prior to transfer. We have recently built a Transitional Care Unit that offers 5 transitional care rooms for mum and baby. We have aspirations to increase this capability over the next few years.  Our pediatric ward has been recently refurbished to offer 8 beds.  There is excellent tertiary support for the majority of peadiatric sub-specialties within 2 hours drive.

Health New Zealand  - South Canterbury is responsible for the delivery of services throughout the South Canterbury region and Timaru Hospital (131 beds) serves a district population of approximately 50,000 based in a General Hospital Facility, (which has just commenced a significant refurbishment programme), providing our local community with such critical 24/7 services as  ED, ICU/CCU, General, Orthopaedic, & ENT Surgery, O&G, Psychiatry, Geriatrics, Oncology & Palliative Care, Internal Medicine and Paediatrics.

Integrity, collaboration, accountability, respect and excellence are at the heart of everything we do. We are a proudly diverse team, as we know a diverse and inclusive workforce achieves the best outcomes for our patients and communities. If you share in these core values and bring them into every aspect of your patient care.

Why Timaru and the South Canterbury region?

We are the best big little city you will find, located on the coast and Caroline Bay, with the majestic Southern Alps in the back-ground.  Timaru is an easy place to live, family friendly and with easy access to an array of outdoor activities - beaches, ski fields, lakes, mountains, and hiking tracks.

Free parking and an easy commute to work really helps with true work life balance!
