This is a fixed-term or secondment opportunity for an experienced policy professional to become a Principal Policy Advisor in the Gas & Fuel Policy Team, within MBIE’s Energy Markets branch.
The Energy Markets branch is responsible for providing policy advice on New Zealand’s energy sector. It is an exciting time to be involved in energy policy and this role offers a unique opportunity to be part of a key part of New Zealand’s economy as it experiences a once-in-a-generation transition to a more sustainable energy system.
You will sit in the Gas & Fuel Policy Team. We are responsible for the regulatory regimes governing the transmission and distribution of natural gas, the wholesale and retail gas markets and the supply and quality of liquid fuels. Our work includes:
- Creating a regulatory regime for carbon capture and storage, to enable carbon to be permanently sequestered underground rather than emitted into the atmosphere.
- Developing a fuel security plan to ensure our supply chains for liquid fuels are secure.
- Providing policy advice and regulatory change to ensure we have the fuel to power our industries and thermal electricity generation needs when renewable generation is low.
- Providing advice and removing regulatory barriers to support the emergence of low-carbon fuels like renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel.
Our branch is a fun, collaborative, fast-paced and supportive environment, with established peer learning initiatives, policy fora and cross-team working, and lots of opportunities for engaging with stakeholders. All our people are talented and unique. We work towards creating a workplace environment where you belong and that enables and allows you to do what you do best. We support diversity so that together we can do work that positively impacts the lives of all New Zealanders.
