Principal Advisor, Strategic Engagement and Stakeholder Insights Capability

Location:     Wellington 
Type:            Five-month fixed term
Hours:         40
Salary:         $153,677 - $191,243

About the role

The Principal Advisor – SESI Capability will provide fixed-term capability to support the Strategic Engagement and Stakeholder and Insights Directorate (SESI), principally in the planning and development of engagement initiatives in support of the Ministry's social and economic development workplan. 

The Principal Advisor will:

  • Provide strategic support and advice to the DCE - SESI.
  • Provide advice to, and work as part of, the SESI Leadership Team to make progress towards achieving SESI goals.
  • Write, peer review, and coordinate the provision of written advice, including Ministerial papers, in a range of styles appropriate to the intended audience (internal and external).
  • Lead and support the delivery of discrete projects that may involve coordinating and managing a range of stakeholders and collaborators, as required.
  • Assist the DCE to coach staff to improve team capability to plan, communicate, present, and deliver work to advance the mission of the Ministry.


The ideal candidate for this role will demonstrate:

  • Extensive experience in providing high quality concepts, strategies, plans, advice, and reports based on data and insights.
  • Extensive experience in working with a variety of Ministers and Ministers' offices.
  • A high level of understanding of the broader strategic context including the Government's overall desired outcomes and goals for New Zealand.
  • An excellent knowledge of government and policy processes and working effectively with Ministers and Cabinet committees.
  • A knowledge of Ethnic Communities in New Zealand.
