About the team  

Our Digital Strategy and Architecture team in our award-winning ICT division (https://www.transpower.co.nz/news/market-system-transformation-nets-transpower-2024-red-hat-innovation-award) helps ensure that electricity is delivered to all New Zealanders 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by maintaining and evolving complex critical IT systems.   

As the Principal Architect - Data you will be part of the team that is responsible for developing and managing Transpower's Information and Communications Technology (ICT) strategy, enterprise architecture and defining the roadmap for the acquisition or development of ICT solutions that support Transpower's strategic business objectives. 

To deliver on the business aligned ICT strategy and plans, the Strategy and Architecture team leads the development and maintenance of business aligned enterprise and domain architectures for information, security, applications, and infrastructure (includes telecommunications and networking) through a process of organisation wide collaboration and consultation.           

About the opportunity  

The Principal Architect - Data is responsible for engaging across Transpower to define data related ICT sub-strategies aligned to business need and investment cases, and for providing architectural leadership to delivery teams through the creation and maintenance of functional roadmaps, conceptual and functional architectures, standards, policies and principles.   

The focus for the Principal Architect - Data will be to work closely with the Chief Data Officer (CDO) to understand Transpower's data strategy and data needs, and also to document current state data capabilities and architectures. Working with the CDO, this person is also responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, and maintenance of the data architecture and blueprints to ensure that it aligns with Transpower's strategic priorities and objectives.

What you'll bring

With depth and breadth of experience in all aspects of enterprise data architecture, you will possess hands on experience or working understanding of wide-ranging key data/information assets including: 

  •  structured data 
  • semi-Structured data (information, documents),
  • GIS & Spatial data, engineering drawings, 
  • Photo & Rich Media, Business Intelligence/Reporting,  
  • Data Analytics & Situation Intelligence, 
  • Data Integration & Streaming Data and
  • key enabling Data Architectures and Platforms. 

 You will have led technical delivery of architecturally significant and complex projects and been accountable for technical solutions end to end, driving both technology and innovative business solutions.  

 With strong problem solving and analytical skills and the ability to anticipate and provide practical solutions, you will be adept at providing architectural leadership.  Your proven ability to translate business strategy and vision into a data strategy, architecture blueprints and change roadmaps through partnerships, will be compliment by a consultative style and confidence that is backed by your experience leading the delivery of architectures and standards, including setting guidelines and enabling consistent delivery of technology services.  

The nature of our organisation lends toward cross-functional stakeholder delivery teams.  As such you will need proven experience effectively communicating (written and verbal) and working directly with senior stakeholders including influencing, translating and presenting ideas and solutions in simple terms to senior leaders and Executive General Managers.

Proven professional experience working in data and technology architecture for a national or international organisation including the provision of options or evaluation or evaluation of technology (software, IT/Data platforms and services), we are seeking applications that evidence: 

  •  Demonstrable experience creating and implementing data strategies, architectures and roadmaps that align with business objectives. 
  • Wide experience in multiple data asset management solutions and practices including: structured data, document/information, GIS Spatial data, data integration/streaming, analytics and reporting solutions. 
  • Experienced in developing, embedding, and implementing data policies, standards, governance, architecture frameworks and data management good practices. 

 Whilst not essential a general understanding of the nature and design of the electricity industry's core business processes will be viewed as advantageous.
