Pae Ora Data & Insights serves as a data science rōpū within Pae Ora Services that uses data to help improve health equity and health outcomes for Māori, to honour the articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and to help align the delivery of patient-focused primary health care services to Hōkai Rangi, our over-arching strategic direction and commitment to delivering great outcomes with and for Māori in our care and their whānau.
Mō te tūnga | About the role
The Pae Ora Data & Insights rōpū (accountable for data, reporting, and analytics) is now recruiting for a Principal Data Scientist. In this role, you will provide strategic, technical and analytical advice which informs the development and delivery of data-driven health insights and analysis. You will play a critical role in how data is used and analysed, drive healthcare analytics, help lead the technical direction behind machine learning approaches, R coding standards, and mentor a team of Junior and Senior Data Scientists.
This is a brilliant opportunity to join the high performing Pae Ora Services team who are committed to improving health outcomes for incarcerated peoples across Toi Ora, Physical and Mental Health, Addictions, Psychology, and Programmes. As well as proactively building and fostering relationships across the Pae Ora service, you will also work across the organisation and in close collaboration with our technical and medical teams to enhance frontline healthcare delivery.

To be successful for this role we are looking for evidence of the below skills, knowledge and experience outlined in your written application.
- Ability to operate effectively in a context that is Māori, and with a strong understanding of the Tiriti o Waitangi and its application within government agencies.
- Te reo Māori fluency is desirable but commitment to grow and operate in must be a minimum.
- Depth of knowledge and experience in te ao Māori and an understanding of tikanga Māori.
- Experience with or working knowledge of Māori Data Sovereignty preferred.
- Strong and effective relationships across the Māori sector inclusive of iwi, hapū, and whānau.
- Significant experience with R & SQL is essential.
- Experience with Statistics and machine learning.
- Experience with health/medical record data.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills including experience and ability in developing and sustaining effective relationships.
- Sound analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to innovate and think critically and creatively.
- An effective communicator both verbally and written, demonstrating clear and concise writing skills
- Proven project management expertise and experience.
- Proven experience in providing strategic advice and critical thinking at a senior or principal level.
- Ability to be flexible and adapt behaviour to reflect diverse situations and people.
- Confidence in challenging the status quo.
- Understanding of the importance of using data analysis approaches that support strong insights for advancing Māori health and well-being outcomes.
