He angitūtanga | About the role
Due to the health and safety requirements and the remoteness of Takapourewa, this role is available either as a Job Share or for individuals who bring a companion to live on the island while they work.
The Department jointly manages the island with Ngāti Koata where you will have direct contact with the iwi. An appreciation for the history of this relationship and previous experience working with iwi will be an advantage.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting Ngāti Koata in their kaitiakitanga role and maintaining ahi kā.
- Fulfilling island biosecurity requirements and undertaking plant pest control
- Supporting species recovery programmes.
- Maintaining infrastructure, visitor facilities, and historic sites.
- Coordinating logistics for visiting personnel.
- Leading visiting staff and volunteers.
- Undertaking compliance support and reporting on work progress.

The salary range for this position is $60,314 to $75,603 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory – this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
