He angitūtanga | About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic Ranger to join our Heritage and Visitors Team in the Rakiura National Park. If you enjoy working in the outdoors, meeting new people and don't mind getting your feet wet then this may be the opportunity for you. 

Stewart Island, South of Invercargill, is New Zealand's 3rd largest island. It is home to several front-country visitor sites, amenities, campsites, viewpoints, as well as a Great Walk track, short walks and access to multi-day walks- the greatest backcountry around. 

This position will be focussed on:

  • maintaining both back country and front country tracks
  • maintaining huts, bridges, and other structures
  • managing assigned project work
  • assisting the wider operations team when required
  • building and maintaining strong relationships with stake holders and internal staff.

At times you will be required to stay away overnight for multiple days in the backcountry, often in remote and rugged terrain.

 

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

We're seeking a committed team player who can build strong relationships with others. If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:

  • A valid full New Zealand driver licence.
  • Backcountry field experience with a high level of physical fitness.
  • Practical skillset with track and structure maintenance experience.
  • Ability to live and work in a small community, including spending time away in remote locations.
  • A strong commitment to health and safety.
  • An understanding and appreciation of conservation values.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build strong relationships across a range of stakeholders.
  • A proactive attitude, problem-solving skills, and adaptability to changing priorities.

Desirable:

  • Current First Aid certificate.
  • Experience in plant and visitor maintenance, carpentry or construction.
  • Chainsaw experience.
  • Experience with 4x4, and boats.

We are passionate about developing our people and will provide training for specialised skills suited to the role.

Private accommodation on the island is limited; if required we have staff accommodation available in a shared house.
