He angitūtanga | About the role
As our next Ranger, you will be an integral member of the biodiversity team. The South Westland weed control programme is large and varied, from Lake Ianthe in the North to Awarua Point in the South. Weed management is a key component of the role and will require you to work autonomously and in a team, demonstrating a strong health and safety focus in the field while using multiple techniques including biological controls.
You may also assist with conservation law compliance work, negotiate fencing agreement contracts with local landowners, help to manage contracts for aerial weed control and assist with animal pest management projects from time to time. Additionally, you will be responsible for issuing various hunting related permits for conservation land. You may also work with/lead volunteer groups undertaking weed and pest control tasks from time to time.
You will be required to spend extended periods of time in the backcountry, often in remote and rugged terrain.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
If you have the following attributes, we are keen to hear from you:
- current full Class 1 driver's license
- experience in weed and pest animal management (e.g., spraying, trapping)
- skilled in small plant/equipment maintenance
- backcountry experience with a high level of physical fitness and competence in rugged and remote terrain
- experience using Microsoft Office suite, GIS, and mobile applications
- ability to stay overnight in the field when required
- strong health and safety focus
- excellent communication skills and the ability to maintain good working relationships with a range of stakeholders
- problem-solving, planning and organisational skills.
Desirable:
- experience engaging and working in partnership with iwi and tangata whenua and understanding of te Tiriti
- current First Aid Certificate
- Growsafe, Approved Handler Agrichemicals Certificate and/or Controlled Substances Licence (Pesticides) Certificate
- 4WD and Light Utility Vehicle (LUV) experience.

You'll be joining a positive and enthusiastic team delivering conservation outcomes in South Westland. The Operations team consists of 36 permanent staff spread across three locations: Fox Glacier, Franz Josef and Haast.

The salary range for this position is $58,816 to $66,578 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
