About the Role

The Acute Surgical Assessment Unit, or M18 as we are known by, is a unique short stay surgical ward that is newly refurbished and is a modern, light-filled ward with a friendly team, and with access to all the latest equipment. Not only do we have 16 inpatient acute surgical beds, we also have a 10 bedded surgical assessment unit.

Much like the Emergency Department, the assessment unit is an acute unit where we assess patients for emergency surgical admission. The nursing team works very closely with the surgical doctors and the other members of the multidisciplinary team to immediately assess and treat patients in our assessment unit.

We have modern diagnostic equipment available in the unit so targeted treatment can be commenced as soon as possible. The whole nursing team are fortunate to work in both the ward and the assessment unit, so they are able to utilise and develop their clinical assessment skills on a daily basis.

About the Team/Service

M18 is a fast paced short stay and assessment ward with 10 ED Surgical Assessment beds, we work closely with our General Surgical teams to assess and deliver a high standard of care to patients and their whanau. We also have 16 beds for surgical short stay patients.


About you

To be considered for this position you must:

Required skills & experience:

  • A current New Zealand annual practicing certificate
  • Have a minimum of 3 years acute surgical nursing experience
  • Demonstrate proven coordination skills
  • Proven history of advanced assessment skills
  • Excellent time management and communication skills
  • Is committed to quality service
  • Ability to work rostered rotating shifts
