Funding to Attract Midwives back to the Workforce

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora are providing funding to support former midwives returning to midwifery practice.

There are around 600 midwives in Aotearoa who are no longer practising. The increased funding is intended to help those who want to return to midwifery, without the financial burden that can come with a Return to Practice programme.

There is recognition for the critical role midwives have in caring for the health needs of our whānau and communities. This funding is one step towards growing and strengthening the midwifery workforce.

Health New Zealand is especially keen to see rural, Māori and Pacific midwives return to the workforce, as these are areas of particular need.

About the Fund

There are two parts to the fund: Return to Practice (RTP) and Return to New Zealand Practice.  The level of funding and recertification requirements will vary depending on the length of time away from practice.   Please refer to the Midwifery - Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora website for full details.

To be eligible for the fund, you must hold New Zealand citizenship or New Zealand Residency.

If you meet the criteria set out by Health New Zealand and would like to register your interest in regards, to working At Te Whatu Ora - South Canterbury, we will make contact with you and discuss clinical placements and supervision that may be required.

Please note this is not a job vacancy and those eligible will be contacted by our local recruitment team.
