Ko wai mātou | Our Organisation:
Middlemore hospital is one of the largest hospitals operated by Health New Zealand- Te Wahtu Ora. It has a catchment area stretching from Otahuhu to Port Waikato, encompassing a population of around 600,000 people. It covers a diverse ethnic population including large Maori and Polynesian populations, significant socioeconomic deprivation and acts as the receiving hospital for Auckland international airport.
Almost all internal medicine subspecialties are represented (medical/radiation oncology is regionally provided) ranging from dermatology, haematology, stroke, and palliative care to rheumatic fever services.
Middlemore Hospital is the main hub for acute care and referral services within CM Health. It is an accredited, teaching hospital of Auckland University.
The Department of General Medicine:
General medicine is a large department with 15 inpatient teams (6 admitting teams per day) and over 50 consultant physicians. A long-standing acute medicine team manages patients at the front door, expediting admission and discharge challenges daily with inpatient teams for more complex patients. Inpatient ward teams are well resourced with one registrar and two house officers.
The clinical medicine encountered on a daily basis is extremely varied in both type and severity not to mention highly varied cultural and socioeconomic factors providing an endless variety of clinical challenges. Alongside a supportive and collegial department, this provides both a professionally and personally rewarding environment.
Counties provides both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes with ample opportunity to contribute alongside an active education programme including weekly grand rounds and well organised M&M and peer review within general medicine.

Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity:
We are currently looking for experienced General Medicine Consultants / Physicians (Senior Medical Officers - SMOs) with a passion for General Medicine at Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukau, based at Middlemore Hospital, in South Auckland, New Zealand.
As a SMO, you will have opportunity to work with the ward-based teams as well as the Acute Medicine Team.
Nga Pūkenga Motuhake | Important Skills:
As the ideal candidate:
- You should be either registered or be eligible for vocational registration within the scope of General Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
- Previous experience as Consultant Physician is desirable.
