At the forefront of the energy sector, Transpower is the regulated state-owned enterprise that owns and operates the national electricity transmission system. With over $5 billion in critical infrastructure assets, we play a pivotal role in connecting electricity generators to users and distribution networks across Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Our Context

With a capital work programme forecast to double in throughput by 2030 and an increase in our employee numbers from ~900-~1300, we need an estimated 50% uplift in throughput across the organisation to achieve our goals. Enterprise initiatives and programmes of work are well underway to achieve this.

About the team

The Innovation and Strategic Change team is positioned at the centre of the organisation and is accountable for developing and delivering the enterprise programme of work which drives organisation efficiency. The team is small, expert, focused, and well sponsored to lead the programme of enterprise change. They are accountable for both the innovation and change practices to support this programme. In addition, the team supports innovations and changes within the Divisions of the organisation, as they are seen as the experts and bring expert practices and processes.

The Opportunity - a new role

As our Strategic Change Lead, you will establish and lead our change management practice and define the change management processes, tools, and methodologies. As the change leader at Transpower you will bring together the community of change managers and direct the practice.

In addition to accountability for change management practice leadership, your will work on identified organisation change programmes or projects to deliver change outcomes.

You will partner with Executive General Managers and their senior leaders to support their respective change programmes or projects. Working with the Head of Innovation & Strategic Change, together you will foster a culture of driving for performance outcomes, change agility, and innovation.

The interesting work you'll be involved in, over the next few years will include:

  • Leading the change management element of our End-to-End Programme which is tasked with accelerating work throughput to support our growing capital programme with 20 initiatives across the business.
  • Supporting change management of the Enterprise Business Capability programme, the objective of which is to re-engineer core business processes and implement an Enterprise Resource Planning system. 
  • Establish the change management practice community and design and implement the change management "playbook" for Transpower.

What will you bring?

You'll have held roles in large organisations, working at an enterprise level to drive change and build change management capability. You will be known for being calm, considered, credible, have an engaging style, and ability to deliver outcomes.

Outstanding communication skills to present complex information clearly and simply, tailoring communications to meet the audience needs, coupled with strong interpersonal skills to foster stakeholder relationships, influencing, partnering, and coaching will see you have impact from day one.

Your expertise will be underpinned by a commercial qualification and experience.

Your CV and cover letter will clearly demonstrate:

  • Demonstrated change management expertise and extensive (depth and breadth) experience in the application of change management to deliver business benefits.
  • Proven experience in developing and applying change management frameworks, practices, processes, standards, systems, and tools.
  • A sound understanding and extensive knowledge of contemporary change management models and practices, processes, and tools.
  • A track record of delivering results at pace (don't be afraid to share metrics in your resume - we are a facts and evidence-based organisation).

This role leads though influence rather than line management, so whilst people leadership experience is advantageous, leading through influence is key!
