About the Role

We have a Takawaenga position for our new service, Te Whakawhitinga. The Takawaenga role includes:

  • Advocacy and facilitation for taangata whaiora hapori and whaanau Maaori accessing the service
  • Facilitation of hui using Tikanga
  • Communicator to taangata hapori and whaanau and the team
  • Educator to the service of ‘Tikanga Best Practice’
  • Tautoko to the team good relationships and knowledge of the local community particularly Maaori providers.


The salary for this position will be based on experience and in line with the PSA Allied, Public Health, Scientific and Technical collective agreement. Additional benefits include kiwisaver contributions (if eligible), professional development and wellness support.

About the Team

Nurture the people “Ahakoa ko wai, ahakoa noo whea me whangai I te tangata”

Te Whakawhitinga is a Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, Waikato co-ordinated primary social service aligned to the Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waiora vision and underpinned by kotahitanga. The kotahitanga values of unity, togetherness, shared vision, working together, trust, relationships, collaboration and integrations are fundamental to the service model of Te Whakawhitinga.

Te Whakawhitinga is a tāngata hāpori/ tāngata whaiora led service that will identify and support access to community resources and services to achieve their goals and aspirations. It will enhance the service provision of primary and secondary health and social service organisations, by working across the housing and social care continuum to ensure partner agencies interventions for the tāngata hāpori/ tāngata whaiora ‘My Plan’ are shared, transparent and coordinated to achieve mauri ora.

You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team (clinical and non-clinical roles) that fosters a culture of mutual respect, safe practice and acknowledges contributions from both cultural and clinical perspectives. 


About you

  • Strong knowledge of Te Reo Maaori, Tikanga and Kawa o Tainui
  • Strong advocacy and facilitation skills utilising Tikanga Maaori
  • Ability to interpret for whaanau maaori and support whaanau maaori to communicate to wider team
  • Willingness to role model ‘Tikanga Best Practice’
  • Able to provide education to clinicians on Te Ao Maaori and best practise for Maaori
  • Whanau centred, collaborative and partnership approach
  • Experience working in a mental health, community health or primary care setting
  • Experience working with Māori and Pasifika groups
  • Ability to take a proactive role with other organisations to achieve sustainable outcomes for tāngata whaiora.
