He angitūtanga | About the role

This is an opportunity to join our team of technical advisors that support DOC's operations staff to deliver work on the weeds that threaten our biodiversity and ecosystems.

You will work as part of a collaborative network, supporting each other in giving the best available advice across the country. You will also work on more nationally focused projects such as the development of best practice, and the delivery of training for DOC staff involved in weed control.

You will be seen as a subject matter expert by your peers and will enjoy working with a wide range of DOC staff, as well as representing DOC in meetings and projects with other agencies including MPI, Regional Councils, and community groups.  

This is a permanent opportunity based in Invercargill or Wellington. We will consider other locations on request. Please state in your covering letter where you'd prefer to be based.

The position will be focused on:

  • Supporting DOC's rangers to deliver effective weed control programmes to benefit biodiversity
  • Developing and reviewing best practice documents that support prioritisation and delivery of our work
  • Providing advice to colleagues and other agencies in relation to weed management

This is a great opportunity for someone with a background in pest plant management and weed control, who is looking to move into a more strategic role as a next step in their career.

We want to hear from you if you have:

  • Experience and understanding of weed management and the impacts of invasive weeds on our biodiversity and ecosystems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Previous experience in planning and carrying out weed control operations.
  • Strong relationship management and stakeholder engagement skills.

Desirable skills, experience, and qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualifications in plant science, ecology, plant biosecurity, or a similar field, or equivalent experience.
  • Qualifications in herbicide use.
  • Experience with GIS, and good data management skills.
  • Familiarity with the NZ flora and experience in plant identification, surveillance, and/or monitoring.
  • Experience working in partnership with iwi and understanding of tikanga Māori and mātauranga Māori.
  • Experience planning, leading, and managing cross-functional projects, meeting timeframes and budgets.
  • Current, full New Zealand Drivers Licence and ability to travel as and when required.
  • Experience in supporting project delivery and giving technical advice and guidance to field staff.

The salary range for this position is $79,656 - $100,639 with the starting salary appointed based on candidate's relevant skills and experience.
