Are you an experienced Test Automation Engineer who would like to apply your skills in the essential work of protecting and securing New Zealand's borders, making a positive contribution on behalf of all New Zealanders?

We are currently seeking a Test Automation Engineer (with technical and test automation architecture experience who understands programming concepts) to join our Test Practice and work within our Product Team.  You will be supporting new initiatives and will get enhancements underway; along with maintaining and enhancing our software applications.  Some of the key areas of the role include:

  • Helping to move us forward, drive a shift left, and have an automate first approach.
  • As an active hands-on automation engineer within the team, showcasing best practices and assisting others to advocate continuous improvement.  
  • Experience working in a great Testing Practice where you support what you develop working within a collaborative, high performing team. 
  • Full-time permanent role based in Wellington.   

In this role you will bring your technical skills to our digital applications and contribute towards driving testing improvements across your team.

Your experience working with agile methodologies and great communication skills will influence decision making and deliver optimal outcomes for our customers.

The Test Automation Engineer role works across multiple agencies and provides evidential assurance that what is being delivered to the customer is meeting functional and non-functional requirements, secure, stable and fit-for-purpose.   

Reporting directly to the Product Manager, and working with Customs Test Practice Manager, the Test Automation Engineer will actively help work with us on a journey towards a fully integrated, fully automated testing function, that covers our product stack to optimise our path to production and reduce the risk of defects.

This is a permanent role in our Information Services (IS) group based in the Wellington Customhouse.

The focus for this new role will be on leading the test function within your product team with an automation first approach to help support and enhance our applications and platforms.    

'You will be part of a team of Architects, DevSecOps Engineers, Technical Business Analysts (and others) working across a range of products and technology stacks, utilising Azure Cloud Services, to collectively deliver regular value to our stakeholders.   

You will also work the Customs Test Practice Manager to provide input and help drive excellence across all team's test practices to ensure the test function is integral to the development lifecycle, and ensuring we collectively deliver quality for our customers and stakeholders.  

  We ideally need someone who…   

  • Has experience architecting test approaches for technical implementations, applying appropriate structural test design techniques.  
  • Has strong experience in test automation fundamentals, programming languages, SQL, database concepts, how to test APIs, service behaviour and testing non-functional requirements.  
  • Recognises risks in code and software architecture and create test plan elements to mitigate those risks through static analysis and dynamic analysis.  
  • Has significant experience with DevOps implementations and continuous delivery (to reduce the manual test-effort); assisting Developers build better Unit tests.  
  • Has experience working in a team to continuously evolve and improve, migrating manual tests to test automated pyramid model or similar and other best practices.   
  • Experience in producing Test Plans and Test Exit reports consumable by both technical and business audiences.  
  • Ideally (but not essential) has familiarity with Agile and ITIL methodologies, and tools such as Jira, Confluence, and Selenium.
