About the opportunity
The Sector Strategy Group supports the Ministry by providing evidence informed advice, robust and reliable information, and insights from advanced analytics. A key focus of the group is working with others in the sector to develop and maintain a shared view of the transport portfolio, its priorities, performance, and efficiency. We have put this data improvement role in place to:
- Drive an improved approach to data governance, management and analysis across the Ministry and Transport sector
- Design a work programme to shift the Ministry's data governance, curation, and analytical approaches to best practice in the public sector
- Implement this work programme, working alongside the leadership team of the Sector Strategy Group, and the wider Ministry where appropriate
- Influence senior stakeholders and bring them together to drive better access to and sharing of data across the transport system
This role does not have any role in the Ministry's internal corporate information systems and data management, but the successful candidate will need to build a constructive and productive working relationship with this part of the Ministry.
This position is Wellington based only.
What you'll bring
You will be an intelligent and talented leader in data analytics / data science who aims for best in class standards for all of your work and the work of your organisation. You will use a range of different strategies to influence others and achieve exceptional results
You will need:
- Proven senior and/or system leadership experience and the understanding of best practice data management and governance within the public sector in New Zealand
- Extensive data analytics and/or data systems development and leadership experience, with the ability to advocate, influence and articulate advice to senior leaders, sector stakeholders and internal teams
- The capability to lead through influence to engage and motivate staff to meet ambitious goals
- A relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. Masters degree level or greater in a quantitative science field) or extensive equivalent experience
- Deep experience of resolving problems (relating to data governance, management and curation)
- Deep experience of working in data relevant roles in government, including an understanding of the role of the public service and of working with other government agencies
- Deep experience in using your extensive knowledge of data systems and tools to provide senior support to teams of professional staff
- Strong influencing, negotiation, relationship development skills at a senior level in order to achieve results
- Exceptional numerical and analytical skills
Salary range
The base salary for this position is $196,028-$257,941 per annum (+ KiwiSaver). We are looking to make an appointment between $196,028 - $238,140. The salary offered will reflect skills and experience you bring.
