Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
This is your chance to be part of the team that operates all the traffic lights in Auckland at the Auckland Transport Operations Centre (ATOC). You can help our city keep moving by providing support for major sports events and concerts, assist police operations during protests and demonstrations, and work with a team of engineers to ensure all the intersections are running as efficiently as possible.
This role supports the management of the transport system across New Zealand. It monitors and responds to planned and unplanned events on and around the transport network, this is achieved by adjusting the signalised traffic system we use and working with other parties on maintaining the transport network.
As the Transport Network Operator, you will play an active part in daily customer journeys and help ensure the NZ public is kept safe on the roads. You will manage New Zealand's transport network and respond appropriately to events reported by emergency services events, which may impact on route reliability and safety.
You will receive initial training in the form of both classroom and practical experience, and work with a buddy for the first few months before going solo.
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) and you will need to be available to work on a shift based on a 24/7 roster.
Appointment salary is $73,570 plus $2,200 shift allowance (plus KiwiSaver employer contribution on top of salary). Along with our other benefits, we also have the NZTA Life, Income Protection and Critical Illness Insurance scheme available for permanent employees.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- Strong experience in a role focused on operations, logistics or service delivery
- Experience working with strict policies and standard operating procedures
- Experience working on a 7-day shift pattern
- Transport management or emergency services background desirable but not essential
- Experience and success at learning, using and understanding bespoke software
- Experience in use of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and SharePoint.

ATOC is all about enabling customers in real time to make smarter, safer and more reliable journeys. In the world of planned events, this means developing operational plans to support delivery, and mitigate the impact of planned events on customer journeys across ATOC's area of operation. This role will support a unique business operating as a joint venture between the Auckland Transport and the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.
